Programs Board of Directors Parents Volunteers History |
Programs While the specific programs offered by KEEN will vary from one affiliate to another, several things will be constant. KEEN will pair a trained volunteer “coach” with each “athlete” for a one-to-one sports and recreation opportunities. KEEN will not charge the athlete or their family for any of its services. And KEEN will not turn away any athlete based solely on the severity of their disability. KEEN’s core program is one of general sports in a gymnasium. A typical KEEN session begins with a group warm-up. Athletes and their coaches then spend about an hour together doing whatever activities are best suited to that individual. Basic ball skills, including basketball and soccer, as well as kickball and “catch” are a staple. We also have such diverse equipment as hula hoops, scooters, large therapy balls, plastic bowling pins, ring toss sets, parachutes, and tumbling mats. Group games such as Duck, Duck, Goose are usually played. Weather permitting, coaches can take athletes outside to run or walk. Then, the group comes back together and each athlete, aided as needed by his or her coach, tells everyone “What they did today that made them very Proud!” Sessions conclude with a not-to-be-missed group dance, either the Hokey-Pokey or the Macarena. Depending upon availability of facilities, KEEN affiliates may also offer swimming, bowling, tennis, fitness, community outings and even music. . See affiliate locations for specific programs in each area. KEEN programs can expand to meet any opportunity, so if you have a facility or idea that would lend itself to a KEEN program, contact us. |
