KEENFest 2004
KEEN’s fall fundraising event, KEENFest, was held on October 19, 2004 at Timpano Italian Chophouse in Rockville, Maryland. Michael Wilbon, Sports Journalist for The Washington Post and ESPN, served as Special Guest Emcee. More than 400 supporters attended the dinner and silent auction featuring a wide array of items ranging from restaurant certificates to sports memorabilia, trips and jewelry. KEENFest also received enormous support from more than 50 corporate and individual sponsors. The highlight of the evening was an awards ceremony honoring KEEN’s corporate sponsors and most outstanding volunteers who help KEEN provide one-to-one recreational activities for children and young adults with disabilities.

“I am truly overwhelmed by the level of support for our 4th annual KEENFest. Because of the generous support of our sponsors, auction donors, and guests, we will be able to continue KEEN’s mission of providing sports and recreational activities for children and young adults with disabilities at no cost to their families,” said KEENFest Co-Chair Estee Portnoy as she thanked sponsors during the evening’s program.
“The launch of our newest venture--a music program provided in partnership with the Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts--and the expansion of KEEN beyond the Washington DC area to Chicago and Kansas City has meant an exciting and work-filled year for KEEN,” Sheila Sankaran, KEENFest Co-Chair and KEEN Board Member added.

Michael Wilbon spoke of KEEN’s impact. “Participating [in KEEN] is as important to children with disabilities as that broken-bat single in the 14 inning was to David Ortiz and the Red Sox last night or any of the other high-profile sports moments I’ve covered during my 24 years working for The Washington Post,” said Wilbon. “I was awakened to find that children with disabilities, even severe disabilities, experienced so much joy from running hand-in-hand with a volunteer, or from rolling or kicking a ball with a coach, or swimming a lap... KEEN is clearly sports at its best,” added Wilbon.

Dan Murphy, President of KEEN’s Board of Directors, recognized three companies for their outstanding and generous support:

· Bates Creative Group for their design and communications services,
· 4 Star Tennis Academy for donating the time and talent of their junior tennis players as volunteers for KEEN’s Tennis Program, and
· Chung's Martial Arts Center for giving Tae Kwon Do lessons each month to KEEN’s young adult athletes.

Murphy and KEEN’s Executive Director, Beata Olulska, also honored outstanding volunteers for their exceptional contributions:

Jonathon Anderson, Volunteer of the Year, for coordinating KEEN Club, a peer-companion program designed to foster friendships between KEEN’s teenage athletes and students from area high schools,

Marsha Glazer, and Joanna Szczepanik, also received Volunteer of the Year awards for starting and coordinating KEEN’s Bowling Program for young adults and,

Alyson Sadofsky, was honored with an Outstanding Commitment Award for her dedication as an exceptional volunteer to KEENFest for the past four years.

“KEEN is a volunteer-driven organization. Without the assistance of hundreds of volunteers and the leadership provided by volunteers like those honored tonight, KEEN would not be able to serve as many children,” said Okulska.

This special evening was a great success due to the support of many people and organizations, in particular, auction donors and sponsors.
