ABOUT US Modeled from an innovative program in Oxford, England, KEEN began in the Washington, D.C., area in 1992. Its creator, Elliott Portnoy, chose to call the program’s participants athletes, regardless of their skills and abilities, and its volunteers coaches, regardless of their experience. Starting with one program and a handful of children, KEEN has received help from more than 6,000 volunteers, expanded into six age-appropriate programs, and, so far, served more than 300 children and young adults with disabilities. It has also added an affiliate program in Charlottesville, Va. KEEN's mission is to provide a range of one-to-one recreational activities for children and young adults with disabilities in a non-competitive environment which encourages the fulfillment of individual goals. KEEN seeks to develop each athlete's self-esteem and confidence, as well as recreational skills and talents, and to increase each athlete's ability to participate in a broader range of recreational activities and environments. |
